Center for Collaborative Sciences

The Center for Collaborative Sciences was established in April 2023 under the Headquarters for Co-creative Future Sciences, which serves as the command center for strengthening Hiroshima University's research capabilities. The Center focuses on addressing Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) and promoting Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in new interdisciplinary research fields and the implementation of emerging technologies that cannot be fully captured by traditional frameworks. Additionally, the Center aims to foster next-generation, innovative research areas and enhance the research environment and support systems to nurture promising young researchers into world-class scholars.

Collaborative Sciences Unit

The Collaborative Sciences Unit is engaged in: (1) the examination, analysis, consideration, and utilization of domestic and international trends related to ELSI/RRI; (2) the promotion of leading research in the field of ELSI/RRI; (3) providing ELSI/RRI support for large-scale projects; and (4) conducting continuous research and support related to ELSI/RRI, from the initial stages of research ideation through to societal implementation, by forming a Collaborative Sciences (ELSI) Platform.

Next-Generation Research Harbor

Next-Generation Research Harbor

The Next-generation Research Harbor provides a support system for young researchers, including organizing interdisciplinary exchange events and offering assistance through research concierges. In particular, it creates an environment where young researchers selected as Distinguished Researchers (DR) within the university and faculty members chosen for the national Emergent Research Support Program can focus solely on their research by reducing their non-research and non-teaching administrative burdens.

Features and Vision of the Research Center

  1. A Hub for ELSI/RRI Research Centers in Japan and Abroad

A Hub for ELSI/RRI Research Centers in Japan and Abroad

The Center for Collaborative Sciences (ELSI Hiroshima) aims to build a "hub" that connects ELSI/RRI research centers domestically and internationally. This hub fosters collaboration among researchers, promotes interdisciplinary research on Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) associated with science and technology, and facilitates the sharing of knowledge and best practices. By linking various fields and regions, the hub addresses global challenges, promotes responsible innovation, and ensures that emerging technologies align with social values. This network contributes to the advancement and reinforcement of ELSI/RRI research and its practical implementation.

  2. A Hub Connecting Citizens with ELSI/RRI Research

A Hub Connecting Citizens with ELSI/RRI Research

The Center for Collaborative Sciences aims to establish a "hub" that connects citizens with ELSI/RRI research. This hub provides a platform where citizens can engage with and participate in discussions on the Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) related to science and technology. By encouraging collaboration between researchers and the public, the hub seeks to promote Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), integrating diverse societal voices into the process. This initiative creates a foundation for scientific and technological advancements to have a positive societal impact and ensures the development and use of new technologies based on shared values.
